Bald eagle populations are on the rise in the Bayou City. There are active bald eagle nests on Clear Creek, Taylor Bayou and Armand Bayou. Eagles mate for life and the nesting pair on Armand Bayou typically returns in September. After reaffirming their bond, the birds repair the nest (which may be as large as the hood of a car), lay eggs and raise young through the winter and spring. These are the weeks that fledgling eagles take first flight! I saw the young bird leave the nest and fly for the first time just last week! Keep your eyes to the sky. Armand Bayou provides a refuge large enough for such a powerful predator to feed, nest and relax. On the wings of an eagle they may be gliding over your neighborhood too.
