Compete to log the most nature observations on April 27th and snag a free Earth Day t-shirt! The ultimate observation champion from April 25th-27th will earn social media bragging rights!

The City Nature Challenge is a worldwide annual citizen science event where collaboration meets friendly competition. Cities work together towards a common goal to document species for conservation and city planning, but also compete to make the most observations of nature, find the most species, and engage the most citizen scientists.

We feel extremely lucky to have a preserve like Armand Bayou Nature Center with such an incredible species diversity. We need your help to log as many species as possible for this event using the iNaturalist app to document animals, plants, and fungi.

This is an amazing opportunity to learn about local flora and fauna in a very hands-on way while participating in an impactful citizen science event with real world applications for conservation.

It’s easier than ever to log your observations using the iNaturalist app or website (iNaturalist.org). The iNaturalist app is free and easy to use. It automatically time-stamps your entry and if your device geotags your photos, it will also input your location for you. Join our project: City Nature Challenge 2025: Armand Bayou Nature Center and the Houston-Galveston team’s project. Your observations should be automatically added to both projects if they meet geographical criteria and are made within the specified timeframe.

If you need to log your observations later, it’s easy to locate ABNC on the map. And the best part?  The amazing recognition software will help you figure out what your observation is!  If you already know what species it is, you can input the common or scientific name. You can also help confirm the I.D. on other people’s observations.
